20th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) in Istanbul (Turkey)

2014

In September 2014, Cynthia Dunning Thierstein and Annemarie Willems co-organised with Ben Thomas (Archaeological Institute of America) a session on archaeology and tourism, "Archaeology and Tourism", in Istanbul, Turkey, at the annual meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA). The aim of the session was to identify how archaeologists and tourism experts can work together and to define the opportunities and challenges that arise from this cooperative effort. The possibilities and the best ways to present archaeological research and communicate the importance of archaeological heritage to an interested public were explored. In this context, the session also looked at ways in which archaeologists can work with tourism experts to create public awareness and make the development of archaeological sites profitable and sustainable.
