Accessibility Assessment and Enhancement at Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain

As part of our commitment to inclusive heritage management, ArchaeoConcept is proud to contribute to the accessibility enhancement of Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi and in collaboration with Mallinson Architects & Engineers, our role focuses on assessing the current state of accessibility across the fort and its surroundings, and providing expert guidance to ensure the site becomes more welcoming and inclusive for all visitors.

The project goes beyond assessment. ArchaeoConcept has outlined actionable recommendations and five targeted sub-projects aimed at enhancing inclusivity: pre-visit communication improvements, accessible routes and surfaces, inclusive interpretation and exhibition design, and modifications to support sensory and cognitive diversity. These proposals align with the principles of universal design and are tailored to the heritage constraints of this UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone site.

Our mission at Al Jahili Fort is not only to improve access but to support long-term cultural sustainability. By embedding accessibility into the site’s renovation plans—including the Exhibition Centre and future visitor services—we aim to ensure that every individual, regardless of ability, can engage meaningfully with this historic landmark.
