Cynthia Dunning Thierstein a été invitée, en septembre 2012, comme experte ICOMOS/ICAHM au nord du Japon (Aomori, Sapporo) pour donner une conférence sur les Palafittes comme Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO et pour conseiller les acteurs locaux sur la mise en place du projet d’inscription au Patrimoine mondial UNESCO des sites Archaeological Sites in Hokkaidô, Northern Tôhoku, and other regions. Lors de ce séjour, elle a pu développer des contacts importants pour le projet initié en 2012 sur un échange d’expositions entre le Japon et la Suisse.
